Everyone has heard of the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Louvre (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.louvre.fr/en" target="_blank">Louvre</a>. Set in what was originally the palace of the French kings, the Louvre is a huge museum exhibiting works of art from prehistory to the 21st century. Famous for the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace, there are many more paintings and sculptures worth a visit. It would take several days to see everything in the Louvre so it’s a good idea to choose a particular gallery or works of art and limit your time to two or three hours so you don’t suffer from museum fatigue.

The <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Musee d’Orsay (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.musee-orsay.fr/en" target="_blank">Musée d’Orsay</a>, which opened in 1986, is housed in what was originally a train station (the Gare d’Orsay) and is home to 19th and early 20th century art works by artists such as Courbet, Bougerau, Delacroix, and Bonheur and has one of the largest impressionist and post-impressionist paintings in the world including works by Monet, Manet, Morisot, Degas and Renoir. Like the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay is a huge museum and very popular so expect long lines but the wait is worth it.

Centre Pompidou



The <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Centre Pompidou (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.centrepompidou.fr/en/" target="_blank">Centre Pompidou</a> (or Beaubourg) opened in 1977 much to the disgust of many Parisians who thought it ugly and a blight on the beauty of their city. It has now become a cultural icon and was one of the earliest modern buildings to be constructed “inside out” – the pipes and structural elements exposed rather than hidden. Inside there is a Public Information Library, a Museum of Modern Art and a Center for Music and Acoustic research. You can find many works by 20th century artists such as Chagall, Duchamp, Delaunay and Kandinsky in the permanent collection and there are always two or three exhibitions on show. Even if the art isn’t to your taste, it’s worth a visit just to ride the escalator to get breathtaking views of the surrounding city.

Musée Rodin



The <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Rodin Museum (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.musee-rodin.fr/en" target="_blank">Rodin Museum</a> in the Hotel Brion is exactly what its name implies – a museum dedicated to the great 19th century sculptor. Opened in 1919 the museum contains many of his most famous works including The Kiss, The Gates of Hell and The Thinker. Also included are works by friends of Rodin; Van Gogh, Renoir and Monet as well as works by Camille Claudel who was a student and a model as well as a lover, close friend and collaborator of Rodin’s.

L’Orangerie



Finally, if you are a fan of impressionism and particularly of Monet, be sure to visit the <a href="https://www.musee-orangerie.fr/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="L’Orangerie (opens in a new tab)">L’Orangerie</a>, so named because it was originally built by Napoleon III as a hot house where oranges and other exotic citrus fruit were grown. There are several impressionist and post-impressionist works in the museum but it’s most famous for Monet’s giant Water Lily series (Nympheas), eight of which the artist gave to the French government in 1922 as a tribute to the end of WWI.

Rouen



With half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and magnificent Gothic architecture, Rouen makes a compelling introduction to Normandy. At its heart stands Rouen Cathedral, whose elaborate façade was famously painted again and again by Claude Monet as he explored the effects of changing light.



Wander through the surrounding old town to discover medieval streets and the impressive Gros-Horloge astronomical clock. Rouen is also inseparable from the story of Joan of Arc, who was tried and executed here in 1431; Place du Vieux-Marché marks the location of her execution. With its combination of architecture, history, museums and restaurants, Rouen deserves at least half a day — and preferably longer.

Étretat



Étretat is one of Normandy&#8217;s most spectacular coastal destinations, famous for the immense white chalk cliffs and natural arches rising above the English Channel. The dramatic landscape inspired artists including Claude Monet, and the best way to appreciate it is on foot, following the clifftop trails for sweeping views over the Porte d&#8217;Aval and the needle-shaped Aiguille.



Below, the small seaside town sits between the cliffs, with a pebble beach opening directly onto the sea. Visit early in the morning or towards evening in summer, when the coastline is quieter and the changing light makes the scenery even more striking.

Honfleur



Tall, narrow houses line the water around Honfleur&#8217;s Vieux Bassin, their façades reflected between fishing boats and sailing yachts. Restaurants occupy the quays, galleries fill the surrounding streets and slate-roofed houses climb away from the waterfront, creating one of Normandy&#8217;s most picturesque settings.



Honfleur&#8217;s distinctive light attracted artists including Eugène Boudin and Claude Monet and helped give the town an important place in the story of Impressionism. Away from the harbor, wander the cobbled lanes and visit the unusual wooden Sainte-Catherine Church, built by local shipbuilders. Then return to the Vieux Bassin for seafood and an evening stroll along the waterfront.

Trouville-sur-Mer



Across the Touques River from Deauville, Trouville-sur-Mer offers a more relaxed interpretation of the Normandy seaside. The town became fashionable as a bathing resort in the 19th century, leaving behind Belle Époque villas overlooking its broad sandy beach, while retaining the fishing traditions that shaped its identity.



The bustling fish market is still one of the best places to experience Trouville&#8217;s connection with the sea, with oysters, shellfish and fresh fish taking center stage. Pair a morning around the harbor with lunch and an afternoon on the beach. Trouville and Deauville are easily combined, but their personalities are noticeably different: Trouville feels more informal, maritime and lived-in.

Bayeux



Beautiful Bayeux is well worth a stop on any Normandy itinerary. The city survived the destruction of the Second World War remarkably well, leaving its historic center filled with old stone buildings, timber-framed houses and peaceful streets surrounding the magnificent Bayeux Cathedral.



The city is internationally known for the Bayeux Tapestry, the extraordinary 11th-century work depicting the events surrounding William the Conqueror&#8217;s conquest of England. However, travelers visiting in 2026 should be aware that the Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for major redevelopment and is scheduled to reopen in October 2027, with the tapestry itself not on display during the closure. Until then, Bayeux remains well worth visiting for its cathedral, preserved center and proximity to the D-Day Landing Beaches.

Caen



History is everywhere in Caen, beginning with William the Conqueror, who transformed the city in the 11th century. The enormous Château de Caen, founded around 1060, remains one of his most visible legacies. Walk along its ramparts before visiting the nearby Abbaye aux Hommes, another remarkable monument associated with William.



Caen also played a central role in the Battle of Normandy and suffered extensive destruction in 1944. Today, the Mémorial de Caen explores the Second World War, D-Day and the wider history of conflict and peace, making the city a natural complement to the landing beaches. Markets, restaurants and a lively student population bring a contemporary energy to all that history.

Deauville
